I'm hoping it doesn't have everything hanging off a USB 2.0 root hub yet again. 480 Mbps is absolutely loving pitiful for a system bus, even for something as compact as a Raspberry Pi

why would you use the app grid when it has a search interface?

this isn’t Windows, when you mash the Windows key or ram the mouse cursor into the corner and type the name of the program and press Enter, you get the program, not some Bing results page

in 99.9% of my experience that's what you get on windows 10 as well

sometimes it gets a bit confused if you "overtype" something you frequently open (eg. "vis" "visu" visua" and "visual" get you "visual studio code" but "visual s" gets you "visual studio 2017") but has a common partial name with something else but I'm going to chalk that up to lovely awful ~*machine learning*~ bullshit

unix windowing systems were designed to run over networks so running them over a VM-to-VM bus of some kind is basically the same thing but with just a couple VMEXITs and a memcpy instead of a networking stack and physical networking hardware

yeah it's bizarre. the #osdev regulars and ops have set up a channel on libera with the same set of people and so far it's just served to be a good way for us to be able to keep two ongoing conversations separated into two irssi windows

nobody is expecting freenode to collapse anytime soon or start selling chat logs to the PRC or whatever people are concerned about happening but it's nice to have a backup. personally I think one or the other is going to run out of money and whoever's solvent in six months is going to buy the other one

i did some drama research and things got weird fast

the guy who shadily "bought" freenode (*) is a very young bitcoin billionaire who also bought his way into being declared a korean crown prince. no, really! he claims that owning freenode is part of his plan to make irc great again - in his mind irc should've won the internet chat wars and it needs someone like him to push it forward so it can take its rightful place

to give you an idea of the sort of leadership he brings to the table, he hired mark "mt gox" karpeles (who has never done anything wrong) to run some portion of his business empire

imo, the only sane choice is to :frogout: from freenode as soon as you can

* apparently it's unclear whether the person he bought freenode from had the legal rights to sell what he now claims to own, but he's willing to litigate, nobody on the other side has the resources to fight it, and they rightfully came to the conclusion that it's pretty easy to start a new replacement irc network from scratch.

lmbo, that's a baffling turn of events

I think at this point we're just waiting for the libera folks to put together some servers that don't crash every few hours. been netsplits out the rear end the past few days and a few cases where zncs just can't reconnect properly

the thing I always want to know about the GPL is what kind of rulings would be made about it if top tier corporate lawyers had to go to bat against the FSF or similar. like if you threw oracle or big blue's lawyers at the FSF over a GPL violation

it's such a long license, 90% of which is bloviating about stopping people from taking arr soft-war freedums that I can't believe that there wouldn't be any sneaky holes in it or even something that a judge would look at and go "yeah you can't just make that legally binding"
