I'm hoping it doesn't have everything hanging off a USB 2.0 root hub yet again. 480 Mbps is absolutely loving pitiful for a system bus, even for something as compact as a Raspberry Pi

the best linux era is the one where things started to be actually usable but we still had a bunch of wacky old unix poo poo. archaic versions of KDE that looked like some old AIX nerds discovered OS/2 Warp for the first time, and the result was somehow kinda good sound didn't work worth a poo poo of course but now in tyool 2021 you too can have your working audio stop working on windows when pulseaudio fucks that up somehow

unix windowing systems were designed to run over networks so running them over a VM-to-VM bus of some kind is basically the same thing but with just a couple VMEXITs and a memcpy instead of a networking stack and physical networking hardware

macOS is an insanely harder core operating system than linux imagine needing gnu to write a userspace for you and then being beholden to their lovely viral license for eternity and then spending the next 30 years big dick swinging like you’re god’s gift to computing while your competitors are busy running the connected world you’d be defending Hurd if rms could write programs in languages other than lisp and compile them on anything other than a leemote mips32 or whatever

need to upgrade a server from ubuntu 14.04 to 20.04. apparently 14.04 is the last version before they switched to systemd so this could be "fun". anyone have any experience with that? pretty sure it's just running a bunch of apache virtual hosts and maybe an nginx reverse proxy, nothing terribly complexTankakern posted:seems like there's some drama at freenode yeah it's bizarre. the #osdev regulars and ops have set up a channel on libera with the same set of people and so far it's just served to be a good way for us to be able to keep two ongoing conversations separated into two irssi windows nobody is expecting freenode to collapse anytime soon or start selling chat logs to the PRC or whatever people are concerned about happening but it's nice to have a backup. personally I think one or the other is going to run out of money and whoever's solvent in six months is going to buy the other one

the thing I always want to know about the GPL is what kind of rulings would be made about it if top tier corporate lawyers had to go to bat against the FSF or similar. like if you threw oracle or big blue's lawyers at the FSF over a GPL violation it's such a long license, 90% of which is bloviating about stopping people from taking arr soft-war freedums that I can't believe that there wouldn't be any sneaky holes in it or even something that a judge would look at and go "yeah you can't just make that legally binding"
