does it seem fair to $TSLA investors that they will (assuming Elon is not lying) let them either sell their stake at a ~20% premium or just give up on the scrutiny applied to public companies?

presumably thats why there'd be such a huge premium

if it's the saudi wealth fund that's putting up the money to make this happen, musk may have found people with the patience (and possibly several other qualities) necessary to keep tesla going for his lifetime

petrostate wealth fund is way way way beyond "gently caress you money", "gently caress this company money", or "gently caress this middling nation-state money".

just spitballin' here but galaxy brain: SEC can't follow up on a whistleblower tip if company goes private??

https://www.washingtonpost.com/tech...ower-complaint/

Could be a good way to get rid of the (permanent) reputational risk to the tesla brand

e: not like the SEC ever wants to follow up on those tips / they have recently changed policy to encourage ratting on smaller companies and discourage ratting on larger ones

on the other extreme, the SEC could act exactly as useless as everyone suspects it is

god is there anything more repugnant than journos fawning over the ~~tragic billionaire~~ and trying to make it out like he's just a dude like you or i but with so much crushing responsibility he's really a modern-day atlas, how sad

i was going to make some joke about how it'd be like a feudal lord getting all the town criers to proclaim to the peasants how overworked and stressed he is, but then realized if anything it's worse than that since:
a) a lord couldn't easily abdicate his position without causing problems, while musk absolutely could just retire tomorrow - except he thinks he's so much smarter than everyone else that no one but him could possibly provide the necessary leadership, and
b) unlike a lot of people today, peasants actually understood their place in the system and knew that it didn't matter how hard they worked, they would never be the king (not defending entrenched social hierarchies just stating the fact that no one reading this is ever going to be a billionaire [sorry])

so while a lord complaining to a peasant would be totally a dick move, i actually don't think it's as heinous as this late-capitalism "billionaires are our friends, sympathize with them" bullshit narrative they try to sell us all the time

if any of the problems surfaced so far are as significant as they seem they should 100% be engaged in trying to find partnerships (aka shop the various assets of $TSLA including the brand around) with other automakers; that's what a competent replacement for elon musk would do.

if musk defines the mission of tesla as continuing on his nutso crusade (to defeat automakers and oil companies! by being a lovely automaker and taking saudi investment!) then indeed, there is no one who is both competent and committed to continue down that path; the two are mutually exclusive
