I didn't play PS with goons, but the outfit I was in would totally have one dude per squad painting while the rest of us in flails just raining hell on the enemy base... sometimes making it impossible to actually capture because we had so many shells in the air at once :v:

I won't pretend he did anything good, either in terms of a good job or morally good, but he was really out there doing quite a bit of what he is accused of pretending to do.

Also around 2004 a bunch of Russians were photographed carrying around a poster of Gadget from Rescue Rangers in what was either mockery of an Orthodox Christian religious procession or a weird furry version of it.

if I recall the Gadget thing was some weird real thing that grew up separate from furries... like, the fact that she was a mouse was incidental, they were legitimately hot for the character.

I think this has only partly to do with goons of yore being shitlords who griefed entire servers for the lulz, however, and is just as much about the fact that goon in-game communities tend to be well-run, solidarity-focused, and efficient. This means goons can waltz into an established game or server community and fairly quickly achieve a dominant position with a minimum amount of effort. This usually upsets a certain kind of players when they realize they're no longer the undisputed lords and masters of their little internet fiefdom.

You are missing the fact that we love that kind of player, an inevitably target them for our shenanigans. Its just a game after all, don't take it so srs

DAO was a specific type of game(cRPG) and DA2 was not, its that simple. DAO was created to be just like old games like Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale, and did a really good job of having the same feeling. DA2, while doing a really good job of having the Dragon Age feel and aesthetic, was more of an action RPG and than a cRPG, and the fan who loved DAO(which was originally sold as being a revival of the cRPG genre) felt betrayed.

for the record, I was disappointed by the change, but enjoyed DA2, but not enough that I remember a drat thing about it other than the initial tutorial on some rocky path

much like rts games, crpgs were an artifact of the limitations of systems at the time they were popular. they did a good job of covering up the graphical limitations by moving the camera far enough away that you were basically looking at sprites, and for similar reasons could have what looked like good physics(for the time) effects scripted instead of calculated by the CPU. Now, there are better experiences to be had, so those games are confined to the retro/nostalgia gamer niches. Which are huge lately, tbf
