Hello, here is an anime season. It contains things you may want to see, and also a lot of things you probably don't! For me? This season is all about the crazy anime grandpa and relaxing with ~mysterious supernatural entities~. Also: horrible gore! That is how the Zorak do.

As usual, the primary source for these dates and titles is Moonphase. This list will contain all of what Moonphase lists for TV series, along with some of the OVAs and movies as well. It is worth noting that, like always, Moonphase lists cinema dates for anime films, not BD/DVD release dates, so said dates will be largely useless to you unless you live in Japan.

I have bolded series that I think will be definite must-watches or sure bets. This is merely my predictions / personal taste, and it is by no means necessarily accurate one way or the other. I've certainly been wrong before in both directions. Italicized series are ones that absolutely no one will give a poo poo about even in the slightest (ultra kids shows, merchandise gimmicks).

For television series, the date listed is the day the first episode airs in Japan. For reasons related to time zones and Japan's screwy way of counting hours past midnight, this might be +/- 1 day from what you'd expect it to be. For OVAs, it's the DVD release date. For movies, it's the cinema premiere date, unless otherwise noted.

Shows with ADTRW threads have a ":neckbeard:" next to a thread link below them. These shows are not necessarily must-watch, but at the very least someone in ADTRW felt a desire to make a thread about them. If you make a thread about a show listed here, please do let us know by posting it in this thread or by PMing me a link to the thread!

TV Series

09/25 Tiny Twin Bears 2 (Ganbara! Lulu Lolo 2)
Shortform anime about bears for kids. For some reason that title just makes me think of MGS2. No idea why!

09/26 Tinny the Balloon Dog (Fuusen Inu Tinny)
Shortform anime for kids about a dog that lives above the clouds thanks to a balloon tied to it. This seems a recipe for disaster with impressionable youths (not really).

9/26 Terra Formars
Manga adaptation by Lindenfilms, directed by Hiroshi Hamasaki (Iron Manime, Texhnolyze). The plot is essentially that humans send some mold and cockroaches in the hope of terraforming Mars (get it) before an expedition is sent. The expedition arrives at Mars to discover a race of mutant insectmen ruling the place. Humanity sends superhumans to fight the insectmen. Been not-so-playfully dubbed "Racist Bug Manga" by some, but some people really dig it regardless! Lindenfilms are an in-betweening studio whose only lead-production thus far was Aiura.
:neckbeard: Manga Thread

9/28 Tribe Cool Crew
Sunrise is producing this original dance-themed anime with the Avex Group. It's being directed by Masaya Fujimori (Some Fairy Tail movies, a bunch of Doraemon stuff). It appeaers to have a definite kids-targeting but so little has been revealed that no idea.

9/29 Buddy Complex: Kanketsu-hen - Ano Sora ni Kaeru Mirai de
Finale special for Sunrise's Buddy Complex mecha anime. Sort of surprised this is happening; the series wasn't particularly great or that popular, and there's a lot of Sunrise mecha series this season. Hmm!

10/02 Aikatsu 3rd
Shoujo idol anime by Sunrise, ad infinitum.

10/02 Electric District's Book Store (Denki Machi no Honya-san)
Seinen comedy manga adaptation by Shin-Ei/Pony Canyon. A shy kid gets a part-time job at a manga store in the middle of the big city, interacts with quirky / unique co-workers that become a tight knit group of friends.

10/02 I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying ( Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai Ken )
4koma comedy adaptation by… uh… nobody actually knows at the moment? It's a short-form thing. The comic is about a normal office-lady who is married to a 2ch regular who acts like an otaku at all times. The comedy follows from her not understanding 2ch / anime lingo.

10/02 Amagi Brilliant Park
Light novel adaptation by Kyoto Animation, it's being directed by Yasuhiro Takemoto (FMP: The KyoAni Ones, Hyouka). A high school student who is a self proclaimed genius is roped into attracting 100,000 visitors to an old and run-down amusement park within the next two weeks to save it from being closed down. "Slapstick business comedy" follows, apparently.

10/02 GUNDAM Reconguista in G
Original Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino is back, and he's already ranting about poo poo like the crazy anime grandpa he is. Wouldn't want it any other way. This is based on a novel Tomino wrote as a "far future" sequel to his Universal Century timeline. In the year R.C 1014, a young pilot cadet named Bellri is a member of the Capital Guard, an organization charged with protecting a massive orbital elevator called the Capital Tower. After an encounter with some space pirates that results in him stealing an advanced mobile suit called the G-Self (OF COURSE) and capturing its female pilot (DOUBLE OF COURSE), Bellri finds himself pulled into a conflict that will shake this new era. Tomino has already been ranting away about how he hates modern voice actors and wants to destroy them, how its not intended for existing Gundam fans and how they won't be able to understand it so show it to your children / grandchildren instead because "we can't expect anything from anyone over 20". Tomino has also stated that this anime will be heavily about how great women are, how he hates politicians, and will ultimately inspire children to start taking action ten years from now to save Japan's environment. Meanwhile it's the first Gundam series they're not first airing in a primetime timeslot where kids could actually see it. SHINE ON YOU CRAZY DIAMOND. Tomino makes works that always fascinating; either they're actually good or just loving mental. Sometimes they're both.

10/03 selector spread WIXOSS season 2
Sequel to the original anime from Spring by J.C. Staff. Girls are pulled into a dark world and forced to participate in a dark game involving trading cards. Some people liked it decently. Usual sequel caveats beyond that.
:neckbeard: Season 1 ADTRW Thread

10/03 Garo: Honoo no Kokuin
Anime standalone spin-off to the Garo tokusatsu series, being produced by MAPPA. Composition is by Yasuko Kobayashi (JoJo anime, Death Note, Genshiken, Casshern Sins). It looks to have very little to do with Garo proper. A prince driven out of his kingdom by a corrupt advisor that has seized power seeks the legendary Gold Knight to retake the kingdom. Presumably Horrors will be involved at some point or another.

10/04 Log Horizon 2
Continuation of the Satelight-led light novel adaptation. It's one of those people-are-stuck-in-an-mmo-for-real things that are all the rage. From what I hear, it's probably the best of its ilk in terms of quality. BUT SURPRISE TWIST: It's being animated by Studio Deen now. Horror.
:neckbeard: Season 1 ADTRW Thread

10/04 Magic Kaitou 1412
A-1 Pictures adapting a manga by the Detective Conan creator. A normal teenage student becomes a master gem thief in order to beat a criminal organization at finding a mythical stone that will be able to grand immortality with the passing of an upcoming comet. This adaptation is a bit weird; the manga was cancelled originally due to Detective Conan becoming so popular that the author focused on it entirely, and the previous previous OVA adaptations didn't sell well. Perhaps they're trying to capitalize on the Detective Conan TV fanbase?

10/04 The King of the Magic Bullet and Vanadis (Madan no Ou to Vanadis)
Fantasy light novel / manga adaptation by Satelight, directed by Tatsuo Satou (Mouretsu Pirates, Nadesico, Rinne no Lagrange). Set in Fantasy Western Europe, seven female warriors with powerful weapons lead some kind of invasion into a kingdom and there's an archer guy that gets a harem of these girls or something? It looks porn-y and who cares.

10/04 In Search of Lost Future ( Ushinawareta Mirai wo Motomete )
Adult visual novel adaptation by Feel, directed by Naoto Hosoda (Miname-ke, Mirai Nikki, Hataraku Maou-sama). An astronomy club investigates mysterious incidents in the school's soon-to-be-bulldozed old building.

10/04 Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works
Fate/stay night visual novel anime adaptation #6 or whatever. It's being animated by ufotable and directed by Takahiro Miura (one of the Kara no Kyoukai movies). If you're not familiar with this franchise: historical heroes are summoned as familiars to fight for a chance to become Jesus or something. This is adapting an arc that never got a TV airing, apparently.
:neckbeard: ADTRW Thread

10/04 Cross Ange: Rondo of Angels & Dragons ( Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo )
Original mecha action show by Sunrise (yet another this season). It's directed by Yoshiharu Ashino. In a world that has developed magical technology that has eliminated all need, a princess is ostacized for being unable to use their magical wonder technology. So now she fights CG interdimensional dragons in her CG mecha while while a really implausible outfit. It doesn't look good.

10/05 World Trigger
Sci-fi action shonen manga adaptation by Toei Animation. Directed by Mitsuru Hongo (Battle Spirits, Outlaw Star, Tenkai Knights), with script by Hiroyuki Yoshino (Guilty Crown). Invincible alien creatures from another dimension attack, threatening all of humanity. Earth is defended by a "mysterious group of warriors"that have co-opted alien technology. Toei Animation doesn't produce the highest quality product by any means and the staff isn't thrilling. I get the feeling this will be middle-of-the-road if anything.

10/05 Nanatsu no Taizai: The Seven Deadly Sins
Shounen battle manga adaptation by A-1 Pictures, it's being directed by Tensai Okamura (Blue Exorcist, Darker than Black, Wolf's Rain). The "Seven Deadly Sins", a group of evil knights accused of conspiring to overthrow the kingdom of Britannia, were said to have been eradicated by the Holy Knights, the kingdom's protectors. Ten years later, the Holy Knights have staged a coup, becoming the kingdom's new rulers. The king's only daughter, Elizabeth, sets out on a journey to find the "Seven Deadly Sins" and enlist their help in taking back the kingdom. The manga it's based on is, as I understand, the new hot shounen manga hitting the scene, and this adaptation's art style looks interesting. Could be good if you're looking for a shounen battle anime.

10/05 Le Fruit de la Grisaia ( Grisaia no Kajitsu )
Visual novel adaptation by 8-Bit, directed by Motoki Tanaka (Kiniro Mosaic). As I understand it: former assassin or whatever comes to a school for outsiders that don't fit into society, visual novel "fixing characters" drama ensues.
:neckbeard: ADTRW Thread

10/05 Wolf Girl & Black Prince ( Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji )
Shoujo romance manga adaptation by TYO Animations. A high school bragging about her romantic exploits claims a boy in her a photo is her boyfriend. He turns out to be a classmate, leading her to convince him to play along. He turns out to be something of a sadist that uses it to torment her. Actual romance develops as always.

10/05 Method of the Heavens ( Sora no Method )
New anime by Lantis and Studio 3Hz (whom I've never heard of before), it's being directed by Masayuki Sakoi (Needless, Maid Guy) and written by Naoki Hisaya (Kanon, Sola). Here's the entire premise: there is a town with a disc over it. That's it. It looks to be some kind of moe thing, I don't know / care.

10/05 Go Google it! Kokkuri-San ( Gugure! Kokkuri-san )
Oh Google, there's no way you're going to protect your name from becoming a verb. Shounen comedy 4-panel manga adaptation by TMS, directed by Yoshimasa Hiraike (AKB0048, Working!!, Amagami SS). A little girl ends up summoning a ghost named Kokkuri-san from Japanese folklore. At first intending to haunt her, he begins protecting her due to her bad eating habits. Other supernatural entities follow.

10/06 Mysterious Joker (Kaitou Joker)
Shounen action comedy manga adaptation by Shin-Ei Animation. A mysterious magician thief steals stuff. It's a kids gag shounen comedy thing.

10/06 Ai Tenchi Muyo!
The harem franchise that will never die is back! This time Tenchi is a teacher at an all girls school and there's more new sci-fi / fantasy girls (now his students) wanting to jump his bones!! They're based on characters from the tale of Momotaro!!! It's being animated by AIC!!!! It's airing as fifty daily 5-minute episodic shorts!!!!! It's being sponsored by some random Japanese town in the hopes of them becoming yet another otaku mecca!!!!!!

10/06 Rage of Bahamut: Genesis
MAPPA is making an anime based on the Rage of Bahamut card game. As far as I'm aware, that is all that is known at time of writing.

10/06 The Circumstances in My Home's Bathtub (Orenchi no Furo Jijou)
GEE I WONDER WHO THE AUDIENCE FOR THIS ONE IS. Shoujo fantasy comedy manga adaptation by Asahi Productions. A high school boy who lives alone finds that a "devastatingly handsome" merman has moved into his bathtub.

10/06 Narihero www
New short-form gag anime by the guy who made that gdgd fairies anime that was similarly not intended for human beings.

10/06 Weak Pedals GRANDE ROAD (Yowamushi Pedal GRANDE ROAD)
Sequel to the well-received shounen bicycle racing anime from this time last year. A nerdy kid attempts to start a bicycle club and become a successful cyclist. He's joined by a team of diverse people who Also Race Bike. But yeah, like I said, this anime has gotten a good reception for being charming and funny, alongside the hot-blooded bicycling faire that one expects from its genre. Probably worth checking out the first season first if you're interested. If you liked the first season: congrats, here's more!

10/06 Inou-Battle in the Usually Daze ( Inou Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de )
Light novel adaptation by TRIGGER, it's being directed / compositioned by Masahiko Ootsuka (episode direction, FLCL, Gurren Lagann) and Masanori Takahashi (episode direction, Zetsubou Sensei, idolM@ster). Four members of a high school literature club, and the young niece of their faculty adviser, are bestowed with supernatural X-Men like powers. They proceed to have their everyday lives completely unchanged by the situation.

10/07 Yona of the Dawn ( Akatsuki no Yona )
Shoujo fantasy romance manga adaptation by Pierrot. A princess whose emperor father is killed by her cousin / romantic interest, fleeing with her servant / actual love interest.

10/07 Trinity Seven
Shounen fantasy manga adaptation by Seven Arcs, directed by Hiroshi Nishikiori (Azumangah Daioh, Gad Guard). After a magic event causes anime protagonist's cousin to go to "another world", the protagonist goes to a school with seven female magic users to try to get her back. It's your usual harem faire.

10/08 Gundam Build Fighters Try
The sequel to the Sunrise Gundam anime about battling with Gundam models that probably shouldn't have been good, but actually just totally was by being sheerly earnest. Anyway, this one is set 7 years after the first series with a new cast (except for Ramba Ral, who is eternal) trying to win the All-Japan Gunpla Battle Championships. Again, first series was legit, which is why I'm bolding this, but there's some substantial risk here actually: there's another Gundam series this season, and it appears Sunrise has shifted a lot of their good animation staff over to that one instead.

10/08 Hi Scoool! Seha Girl
Sega's masturbatory vocaloid-related 3D CG anime where the anthropomorphized versions of Sega game consoles are enrolled at a Sega academy and need to enter into the world of Sega games in order to graduate. Here's the Sega Genesis, for the curious

10/08 Coffin-Princess Chaika: Avenging Battle
Just gonna copy my last summary here: " Light novel adaptation by BONES. A retired 20-year old soldier meandering through life now that the war has ended encounters a 14-year-old sorceress (with sniper rifle) carrying a coffin and starts following her in hopes of finding meaning to his life again, along with his adopted sister. The original light novel is by the author of Scrapped Princess and Strait Jacket, is being directed by Soichi Masui (Scrapped Princess, lots of storyboarding for basically every BONES series, literally), with series composition by Touko Machida (Galilei Donna, Amagami, Lucky Star, Is This a Zombie?)"
:neckbeard: Season 2 ADTRW Thread
:neckbeard: Season 1 ADTRW Thread

10/08 A Good Librarian Like a Good Shepherd ( Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai )
Seinen romance manga / visual novel adaptation by Hoods Entertainment. Loner kid at a school with a massive library is the only member of the library club until a bunch of girls end up joining.

10/08 Parasyte (Kiseijuu: Sei no Kakuritsu)
Seinen horror / drama manga adaptation by MADHOUSE, it's being directed by Kenichi Shimizu (Avengers Confidential, a ton of key animation + episode direction), with composition by Shojo Yonemura (Death Note, Berserk (TV), Pokemon (TV)). Alien life forms land on earth, parasitizing human hosts and taking over their minds. Sentient and apathetic beyond a desire for survival and a hunger for human flesh, the parasites hide inside human society, feeding on human beings. An alien attempts to take over Shin Izumi, a human student, while he sleeps, but instead accidentally merges with his arm. Shin is forced to attempt to connect with the monster that now shares with his body in order to stop other humans from being killed by the aliens. So, Parasyte is a pretty good manga, and is pretty hosed up in a good way. They've changed the art style for this adaptation (which is fine, because the art never was the original manga's strongpoint), and I'm hoping it measures up well.

10/09 ShiroBako
Original slice of life drama/comedy by PA Works, it's being directed by Tsutomu Mizushima (Shin-Chan, Another, Genshiken, Girls und Panzer) and written by Michiko Yokote (same). Five girls decide to enter into the anime industry, experiencing the trials and tribulations that such a thing curtails. Looks like P.A. Works is very much a fan of "write what you know", in this case "anime girl slice of life" and "anime".

10/09 Psycho Pass 2
noitaminA block series #1. Sequel to the popular cyberpunk crime drama / mystery series by Production I.G., with a script by Gen Urobuchi. The original series is super popular and pretty decently received, so if you liked that: hey, here you go. It follows policemen that use instanteous psychological / crime profiles known as "psycho-passes" to evaluate and judge criminals. Note: There was a studio change! May not be as good! Tatsunoko is doing it now!
:neckbeard: Season 1 ADTRW Thread

10/09 April is Your Lie ( Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso )
noitaminA block series #2. A-1 Pictures is adapting a shounen drama/romance manga. A piano prodigy who gives up playing after having a mental breakdown during a recital and can no longer hear the notes returns to the musical world after meeting a free spirited violinst. They sure like putting musical romance dramas into noitaminA block, huh.

10/09 I Will Become a Twintail ( Ore, Twintail ni Narimasu. )
Light novel adaptation by Production IMS, directed by that My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute guy. A high school student who loves twintails meets a magical girl from another world who grants him the power to turn into a twintails girl with supernatural powers in order to fight monsters. I don't think this is a comedy or parody. I think this is just a thing that is happening, for some reason.

10/11 Ronia the Robber's Daughter ( Sanzoku no Musume Ronja )
Actual-no-poo poo novel adaptation by Studio Ghibli, directed by Gorou Miyazaki (That EarthSea movie no one liked). It's in 3D CG (get hosed). A girl named Ronja, the daughter of a chief of a tribe of forest bandits, experiences life in the forest.

10/11 Bonjour: Koiaji Patisserie
CONNECT and SILVER LINK are heading this adaptation of a yet-to-be-released cellphone dating sim for girls. Noriyaki Akitaya (Bakuman, Persona 3 the movie) is directing. A girl attends an elite confectionary school on a scholarship in order to follow her dream to open a pastry shop. She meets a bunch of guys

10/12 Girlfriend (Kari)
Someone is paying Silver Link to adapt a virtual-girlfriend cellphone game.

10/16 Yuki Yuna is a Hero (Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru)
New original slice-of-life anime produced by Studio Gokumi, it's being directed by Seiji Kishi (Persona 4) and written by "Takahiro" (Akame ga Kill). As it's an original IP and there's so little known, I'm just going to copy the summary given by the studio here: "The story takes place in the era of the gods, year 300. Yuuna Yuuki lives an ordinary life as a second year middle school student, but she's also a member of the "Hero Club," where club activities involve dealing with a mysterious being called "Vertex."

10/18 Mushishi Season 2 - Part 2
Continuation of the second season of Mushishi, which was bifurcated due to a variety of production timing issues. Mushi-shi is fantastic, its second season was perhaps even more fanastic. It follows the adventures of Ginko, a Mushi master (mushi-shi) who journeys across Japan researching the mysterious entities known as "Mushi", strange supernatural phenomena that dwell in and shape our world, while helping the people who encounter them. It's a super atmospheric work of art with stellar imagery, audio work, and a phenomenal soundtrack.

October Cloudy Laugh ( Donten ni Warau )
Historical fantasy action shoujo manga adaptation by Doga Kobo. In the Meiji era, three brothers are the boatmen for a high security lake prison where the nation's criminals are sent. There's a supernatural plotline underlying it involving wizardry and what not.

OVA Series

12/24 Hybrid Child 3
Hasn't stopped being weird!

Fall Tsubu(Heart)Doll
OVA about 16 girls wanting to become idols for the city of Sagamihara because Sagamihara wants to use this OVA to get those mad tourism dollars. Apparently the city thinks this will revitalize the town. I'm not sure what the end goal said town sees if it's attempting to make a long term industry for its inhabitants by attracting nerds from the Japan's major metropolises to visit there.

Fall Some kind of Black Butler OVA
The link doesn't even work at the moment

Fall Twin-Angel OVA

11/11 Patema Inverted
BD/DVD release for the film version of the latest work by Yasuhiro Yoshiura (Pale Cocoon, Time of Eve). This is its US release date, actually! Glossary of useful terms etc

AT-X: Subscription-based satellite TV channel airing mostly anime. Because of its obscure nature it's (in)famous for airing uncensored versions of various fanservice anime that has naughty parts removed on normal terrestrial free-to-air television.

BONES: Animation studio. Made a bunch of fantastically good shows some years back, has been less than successful lately. They have five separate sub-studio teams that specialize on various things. ANN Entry

Gen Urobuchi: The dude who wrote Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Blassreiter, Saya no Uta, and Fate/Zero. He's sort of a hot topic of discussion in both the Japanese and Western anime community since quite a large number of people are really into his plots, which are typically very dark. Patron Saint of jonjonaugs everywhere. ANN Entry

Gonzo clause: Rule of thumb that says that any anime animated by studio Gonzo will suck poo poo. Quite accurate in general, and no longer irrelevant since Gonzo magically lives again now. ANN Entry

JC Staff: Animation studio, usually considered to do above average quality work. Mostly known for their endless stream of romantic comedies with at least one tsundere character voiced by Kugimiya Rie per show. Sort of a non-topic nowadays. ANN Entry

Josei: Literally means "woman", but in this context it means a watcher/reader demographic, mostly consisting of young adult women and girls in their late teens. Often totally interchangeable with seinen.

Light Novel: A style of Japanese novel roughly equivalent to the Western "Young Adult fiction" in terms of complexity and length, though the audience is wider. They are the source for a lot of anime adaptations nowadays, and typically have incredibly long and stupid titles.

MADHOUSE: Anime studio that produces some high quality works and generally aim towards non-conventional works (say, about karuta). They offset this risk by interspersing their good shows with a lot of contract work and a lot of really cheap sure-sells to make ends meet. These guys do all the western nerd animes (Batman, Halo, Mass Effect). ANN Entry

Noitamina: A late-night one-hour anime timeslot on Fuji TV, a Tokyo-based terrestrial channel. It was initially explicitly aimed at the josei demographic, but these days almost anything goes. It has a reputation for airing odd or experimental shows, as well as for above-average quality. ANN Entry

ONA: Original Net Animation, short term for "straight to internet stream".

OVA: Original Video Animation, short term for "straight to video".

Production I.G: Generally well-regarded animation studio, known for things like GitS:SAC, Patlabor and a bunch of Oshii Mamoru movies. They are probably the best studio at the moment for making 3DCG work well. They have several sub-studios and teams working on things simultaneously. ANN Entry

Seinen: Literally means "man", but in this context it means a watcher/reader demographic, mostly consisting of young adult men and boys in their late teens. Often totally interchangeable with josei.

SHAFT: Animation studio, mostly known for very low-budget but nevertheless visually interesting shows. See also Shinbou Akiyuki. ANN Entry

Shoujo: Literally means "girl", but in this context it refers to the demographic aimed primarily at teen girls.

Shounen: Literally means "boy", but in this context it refers to the demographic aimed primarily at teen boys.

Shinbou Akiyuki: A director that seems to be at least partially insane or permanently high. Usually works with SHAFT and has a number of gimmicks, many of which involve meta-jokes and the like. The animation in his shows is often ridiculous and ADTRW is down with that. ANN Entry

Studio DEEN: Animation studio infamous for its lovely adaptations and even shittier animation. ANN entry

ufotable: Animation studio, best known for their habit of putting stop-motion clay figure animation in odd places, and for the Kara no Kyoukai movie series. Generally does high quality work these days. ANN entry

Visual Novel: "Video Game" novel. Text stories presented with art, sound, and often voice acting. Dating sims are a typical example, though it can often skew towards adventure games as well.

Wakamoto Norio: That guy with that awesome voice that everyone likes. ANN entry

Summer stuff

07/02 Bakumatsu Rock
Shoujo manga adaptation by Studio Deen. What if the Tokugawa shogunate was oppressing people with brainwashing police who happen to ALSO BE IDOLS?? What if, further, a bunch of anime teens began the Meiji Restoration to overthrow the shogunate by rock and roll? What if, indeed? It's being directed by Kawasaki Itsuro (Legend of Legendary Heroes, Sengoku Basara).

07/02 Free! Eternal Summer
The second season of Kyoto Animation's Free! Anime about dudes in a swimming club. Basically your typical KyoAni series, just aimed at more of a female audience. Kind of boring really. The backlash that happened from people angry last time was more interesting than the show itself.
:neckbeard: ADTRW Thread

07/05 Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal
A remake of the trend-setting magical girl show for girls, Sailor Moon. It's being produced by Toei Animation and directed by Munehisa Sakai (One Piece, various PreCure episode directions). For those who have never heard of this: a normal girl discovers she's from space and that she and her planet-themed friends need to defeat an evil lady. If you are interested in this, it’s worth noting that it's being aired every other week (which is weird) and that none of the staff from the original are around (which is actually kind of a big deal since a bunch of really good writers / directors arbitrarily got their start there).
:neckbeard: Sailor Moon general thread

07/05 Sword Art Online II
Sequel to the previous Sword Art Online light novel adaptation by A-1 pictures. To review: virtual reality MMO is created, and to no one's surprise it's impossible to log out of and if you die in the game, you die for real. The anime was insanely popular in both Japan and the US for some reason, so a million spin-offs followed and here we are with the sequel. This time, the protagonist is hired to investigate some kind of wild west MMO where apparently someone has a gun with the power of “if you are shot in the game you are shot for real”. Because that is literally the only stakes one can add to “MMO anime”.
:neckbeard: ADTRW thread

07/05 Aldnoah.Zero
Original anime by A-1 Pictures, directed by Ei Aoki (Fate/Zero, Wandering Son) and concepted (not written) by Gen Urobuchi (Madoka, Psycho-Pass, Fate/Zero, Gargantia). In 1972, a hypergate is discovered on the surface of the moon, leading into contact with beings from Mars. Mecha warfare commences. I dunno, I find it a bit hard to get too excited; Ei Aoki is very competent and Gen can certainly write decent plots, but the closest thing to this he's written anime wise was Gargantia, which was pretty disappointing. Probably worth checking out.

07/05 Barakamon
Slice of life comedy manga adaptation by Kinema Citrus, directed by Masaki Tachibana (Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, Legend of the Heroes). A young and handsome Calligrapher is exiled on a small island after punching a famous calligrapher. Being much a city-boy, he is forced to learn to adapt to his new life and his new, strange neighbhors that become his new family. Seems very Yotsuba&-esque, which is a good thing. The manga has been pretty well received and Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 was really good so hey.
:neckbeard: ADTRW Thread

07/06 SPACE DANDY, PART 2
Continuation of Winter's super excellent episodic comedic space adventure animated by Bones and head-directed by Shinchiro Watanabe (Bebop, Champloo, etc). It's basically a collection of different directors and animators on a single goofy setting ("a bunch of layabout alien-hunters attempt to make money") doing really strange and interesting things with a whole lot of budget. This second season was enabled by the support of Adult Swim (where it'll be airing on Saturdays again), which is great. There's a Masaaki Yuasa episode sometime this season that I'm pretty drat excited for. Just don't go into this expecting a plot or anything serious. It's a hell of a ride, and if you enjoy animation for animation's sake, you will likely find a lot in this.
:neckbeard: ADTRW Thread

07/06 Akame Slashes ( Akame ga Kill! )
Shounen manga adaptation by White Fox, directed by Tomoki Kobayashi (Amagami SS+, Utawarerumono). Set in a fantasy setting, it follows a young man who travels to the local capital to earn money for his starving village. Finding the society unimaginably corrupted, he is recruited into a group of assassins that aims to kill those responsible. Apparently the budgets in the manga are pretty cool, so if there's a budget this may be interesting to watch even if the concept is a bit trite.
:neckbeard: ADTRW Thread

07/06 Monthly-Girl Nozaki (Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun )
Shounen manga adaptation by Doga Kobo, directed by Mitsue Yamazaki (Hakkenden). Romance comedy-thing. A girl confesses her crush to her classmaste, the titular Nozaki. Because this is anime, he is a published monthly shoujo manga artist and misinterprets her as a fan of his, leading to crazy misunderstandings. Can she get her feelings across? Going by all anime romances ever: not before the final episode at least. Apparently the manga is actually pretty drat good & funny so this may be worth a look.

07/10 Terror in Tokyo / Terror in Resonance (Zankyo no Terror)
This season's noitaminA series. It's an original anime by MAPPA, directed by Shinichiro Watanabe (Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Space Dandy) with music by Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex). No idea who is writing it yet. In an alternate present, Tokyo has been decimated by a terrorist attack. The culprit is unknown, and the only clue is a bizarre video uploaded to the internet that befuddles the police. The culprits, however, are two young men called "Nine" and "Twelve", two men who form an organization dubbed "Sphinx" that aims to create a grandiose game that will encompass all of Japan. Really vague summary, no idea what's going there really, but Watanabe is super super competent and the trailer looks interesting. Watanabe has never done a thriller before (though he's certainly directed episodes with elements of that), so it'll be interesting regardless. Plus, you know... Yoko Kanno.
:neckbeard: ADTRW Thread

07/10 Persona 4 the Golden Animation
Yes, another Persona 4 anime adaptation. The first one was fairly popular, this one is being done by a completely different studio, A-1 Pictures, and its moving the director of the previous (Seiji Kishi) into the Chief Director slot and bringing in Tomohisa Tagucha (episode direction on previous anime) to direct. Apparently it is retelling the same exact thing again, except with the added character plot from the Golden updated version of Persona 4. Oh, and if you're not familiar with the plot of this somehow: kid moves to live with uncle and cousin, meets new friends, summons stands Personas to solve the supernatural circumstances behind a series of serial murders.

New Kill la Kill OVA is out today (part of a blu-release iirc) basically its a 43 minute episode 25 that deals with the aftermath of the finale. I liked what I saw from some of the screenshot leaks. Probably will be good if liked KLK and probably bad if you hated it.

KLK is a show that I enjoyed once despite its flaws and never want to watch again beacuse of those flaws so I'm tapping out on that one.

I'm unironically looking forward to Racist Bug Anime though. The manga is absolutely moronic, it's like Gantz without being the worst manga ever written, but there's something hilarious about the crazy ACCORDING TO KEIKAKU poo poo they do with their animal powers. Whihc is the other thing, the author clearly just wants to write about animals doing cool poo poo but that doesn't sell a manga so he goes gently caress IT RAMP THAT UP TIMES A HUNDRED AND STICK IT ON A HUMAN.

Yeah its weird, I saw the show once, liked it, and don't really feel the need to watch it again. Though I'll check out the OVA and probably watch the dub when it somehow gets on Toonami (highly unlikely I know). I mean to be honest I got into the show like in episode 14 just on a whim and only looked back at the first 4 episodes so I probably will go back and watch the whole series start to finish.

Surprisingly most looking forward to April is Your Lie ( Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso )

If it follows the manga I think it will fail the goon standard 3 episode test since it starts off very generic, but the last couple of translated chapters have been really good so I'm excited to see it animated.

I don't think looking forward to that is all that surprising; as much as I joked about noitaminA doing a lot of that kind of show, that kind of show is pretty drat good when well done. If the comic is good, hey, all the better

Ugh, Wixoss. I can see why it was somewhat positively received early on, when viewers were basically parsing it as a bunch of Magic: the Gathering-related in-jokes combined with imagery borrowed from Madoka, but the attempts at pathos fell flat at times (why are we supposed to sympathize with Yuzuki again?) and it started aggressively violating its own internal logic towards the end.

"This one's only practice. The real sword I intend to forge will be three times longer."

"Can there really be a sword as monstrous as that in this world?"

"Yes. I can see that sword... Somewhere out there..."
Log Horizon and Chaika both had fantastic first seasons, especially Chaika, which has absolutely beautiful fights--it's the little things like the way Tohru kicks dirt in his opponent's eyes or uses the terrain. Unlimited Blade Works is the most consistently solid part of FSN and my favorite all told, so I'm glad to see it given a chance to shine. These three are absolute locks.

I really enjoyed Grisaia's common route, but it's an anime adaptation of a multi-route visual novel; for some reason, Amagami is the only one they've ever bothered to omnibus, and the rest tend to be terrible... And a lot of what sold that common route was the humor. So yeah, I'm kind of worried. It's probably not going to be that good, but hey, the second and third games have main storylines instead of routes. Maybe we'll get to adaptations of those two.

Takahiro's stuff is kind of hit-or-miss (Akame is solid and I enjoy it but it's hard to call it good, Majikoi waffles between pretty cool and kind of dumb, etc) and Seiji Kishi is essentially the same, so I have no idea how Yuuki Yuuna will turn out. And I can't be the only one morbidly fascinated by the idea of Twintail anime apparently taking its premise completely seriously, so I'm going to suffer through at least one episode.

The rest I'm probably going to wait on word of.

Magic Kaitou and Yuuki Yuuna I'll definitely give a shot. The PV for Yuuna doesn't look that great, so I'm not exactly filled with confidence that it'll be any good. Parastyte I'm hopeful about as well. The art looks very different from the manga, so I wonder how faithful of an adaptation it will be.

Also going to give both Cross Ange and Ore Twintails a try. I'm probably just deluding myself that either will have anything worthwhile, but if they don't it won't be a huge loss to drop them.

Overall, Fall looks like it's going to be a really busy season for anime.

Guaranteed Watch

Fate/stay night Unlimited Blade Works - An adaption worthy of UBW? We'll see.

Grisaia no Kajitsu - After all the delays, it's finally here!

Gugure! Kokkuri-san - I hope the anime captures the manga's dry, rather dark sense of humor. The promo gets my hopes up.

selector spread WIXOSS - Picking up after a killer cliffhanger.

Coffin-Princess Chaika: Avenging Battle - Watch. Must do.

Likely Watch

Amagi Brilliant Park - KyoAni series are always high on my watch list.

Sora no Method - Iyashikei series with fantastic elements are a favorite of of mine.

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso - I always love stories with a musical theme. Romance is a draw, too.

Inou Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de - This sounds like fun and TRIGGER always pulls things off with style.

Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru - It's a genre I like and a writer I trust.

Trial Watch

Nanatsu no Taizai: The Seven Deadly Sins - I need a new shounen title now that HxH is ending.

Akatsuki no Yona - This sounds like something that I'd enjoy, but the season is already really crowded.

ShiroBako - PA Works titles are really hit or miss.

Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai - None of the anime based on August games have been any good, but I always hold out hope.

Denki Machi no Honya-san - This looks cute.

GUNDAM Reconguista in G - Haro, genki!

The Grisaia VN was really funny but it has a lot of qualities that would be poor for adaptation. I really expect the adaptation to be total garbage. And 8-bit has a terrible track record. Clannad was a multi-route game that had a really good adaptation, Kyoani actually managed to combine the routes intelligently without ruining the pacing. Although of course the best part of it was the second season which was based on the more story focused linear second part of the VN.

BUILD FIGHTERS TRY:hellyeah:

I'm also in for more Yowamushi Pedal. The manga is apparently considerably further along than where the first part of the anime ended, so it should be interesting.

Psycho Pass should prove amusing if it delivers on the last note of the first series; I'm really curious to how the characters adapt to their changes in status quo after what happened to them.

Parasyte's got a good rep, and is some old fashioned scifi horror action poo poo, so that should be amusing.

Inou Battle for two reasons 1) I fully trust Trigger and 2) I'm curious to see what they do with what seems to be, quite frankly, some much more mundane poo poo than they usually do

I'll give a shot to:
Recongista... maybe this is the first Tomino anime I actually like?
Fate. I have a mild enmity towards the entire franchise, but I liked Zero, so... I duno maybe. Maybe this story is good if you change it around enough
Garo, because I'm kind of a Garo guy.
Terraformers: I am a fan of dumb, meathead action anime... but those bugs ARE pretty racist looking... will probably live or die by the quality of it's production values.
I'll give 7 Deadly Sins and World Trigger a shot, but adaptations of (relatively) recent, ongoing shonen anime are a dicey deal. They're going to either end unsatisfyingly or come up with some anime-only bullshit. Which will it be!? Will I even stay around long enough to find out!?
Donten ni Warau because man, Doga Kobo makes some really pretty anime, and this is the first time they've been on my radar and aren't making a cutesy girls show
