That illusion of progress isn't cheap. The 2.0.x patching to PTU & then live was almost half a million bucks worth of bandwidth.

You'd think fixing & optimizing a crucial game infrastructure problem like patches that burn money & goodwill in equal measure would be a tip top engineering dev concern, but evidently the brain trust they have in Frankfurt is too busy extending the CryEngine to make planets rather than fixing basic problems that should have been fixed day 1.

You could jam a bunch of people onto a ship under the guise of some crazy mostly-invisible, noodle-box-pushing "emergent gameplay" and then wait until you're in the middle of nowhere then log out, leaving them floating like the detritus they are.

Q. What happens on a disconnect or rage quit? Do I lose a life?

When you disconnect (or otherwise quit in flight) the server attempts to take you to “auto pilot”. If you’re in a space instance (i.e. not already in warp/ auto pilot) and close enough to a hostile the server will attempt to gain enough separation to enter auto pilot. If it’s successful the server will then place your ship back on the planet you last landed on. If not, and you haven’t managed to reconnect to your AI controlled ship before the hostile destroys your ship it is assumed you ejected successfully and will be returned to the last planet you landed on. If you have insurance will have a new hull waiting for you. We will monitor player’s disconnects and if we feel like you are “gaming” the system we may enact a “death” penalty on you and decrease your internal life count.

Not cool, guys. Not cool.

Well, they gotta get SOMETHING on sale soon. They've not been selling at least one limited ship for days now. The free fly isn't generating enough revenue to keep them revenue positive. The Reliant (ship in the foreground) is due to hit the hangars soonish so they need a new banner image to go with that announcement & associated sale. So there's that.

It's always seemed like the stupidest choice for an engine. CryEngine is pretty, but isn't really built for diverse gameplay. It's the engine you'd choose if all you wanted to do was make something pretty with zero substance or complex mechanics. Like a game about screenshots & jpgs, not fun.

That being said, it's a LOT more relevant that she's both a poor actress and a terrible person to the people who have sent her and her husband money. She could be 500 pounds with terrible acne scars, if she was a decent person; it'd mean a lot more than her looks.

The engine was a huge part of it. The doubling-down doubly so. My money on the real problem, though, is on the insistence of having FPS and space flight using a single engine with no loading screens, necessitating the logarithmic complexity in integrating FPS, space flight, gravity on multiple planes, EVA, and huge spaces to hold it all. Chris tried to build the matrix with nothing but hopes and other people's money.

My question is though is how much of this added complexity is from using CryEngine as the basis of this unified experience. Would Unreal Engine 4 or Unity or something be better?

I know nothing about game engine featuresets, but can only extrapolate how bad CryEngine must be as they seem to be gutting almost everything except the renderer to make it work & endlessly blame the engine's weaknesses for reasons their bodge jobs don't quite work out.
